Martin Underwood is Director of Warwick Clinical Trials Unit that has a portfolio of Phase III trials in cancer, trauma & orthopaedics, emergency and critical care, rehabilitation, and chronic painful disorders.
Martin trained as a doctor in Manchester England. After GP training he worked for 10 years as a full time general practitioner initially in Lusaka, Zambia, and subsequently in Manchester England, before starting an academic career.
He joined Warwick Medical School as Professor of Primary Care Research in 2007.
He now works clinically as a general practitioner in Coventry, UK.
Martin’s work includes large trials of complex interventions for back pain, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, depression, chronic widespread pain, whiplash, falls prevention, and headaches. He also has substantial experience of evidence synthesis and guideline development.
On behalf of the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE) he has chaired guideline development groups on low back pain and on headaches. He currently chairs the NICE accreditation advisory committee.
